saint peter square a brillant design by Bernini. the result was this stunning ellipseshaped square, lined  with two impressive colonnades crowned with 140 statues of the saints and forming a portico wide enough to let carriages pass. wonderful view of St. peter's from via della conciliazione. Papal blessing on Sun. at noon, except in summer.
